How To Fix iLok Windows Error “background component required…”

Posted by in Tutorials on May 6, 2016

I’ve had this problem twice now, once when first installing the iLok software and again after running an update. iLok won’t open and a pop up box appears, proclaiming, “Software Component Unavailable
A background component required for iLok License Manager seems to be unavailable. If rebooting does not fix this issue, please visit iLok.com and download and run the latest License Support installer”.

After multiple reboots, un-installing and re-installing the software and threatening my laptop with a hammer, it still didn’t work.

None of my licenced products would work and after installing a load of new Air Music products that use the licencing system, Cubase wouldn’t even open! I was beginning to  despair – there seems to be no mention on the iLok support guide so I had to trawl the forums.

Eventually I found the solution and it’s actually quite simple:

  • In your Windows search box (bottom left) type in Services and it should bring up “Services – Desktop App”.
  • Scroll down to “Pace iLok License Services” and in the Startup Type column, see if it set to “Automatic”.
  • If it is, right click on the word “Automatic” and select “Properties”.
  • In the Startup Type option box, change it to “Automatic (Delayed Start” and click ok.
  • Reboot your PC and you should be good to go!
  • Hope this helps 🙂
